Air distribution and equipment

Give each part of the system its own quantity.

Air devices

Separate supply diffusers, return grilles, and exhaust registers by the drawing’s tags. Manually mark each included device and keep type-specific counts.

Equipment

Count air handlers, condensers, and rooftop units in named rows. Review plan locations against equipment schedules without counting a schedule reference as another unit.

Duct and line routes

Calibrate the sheet and trace the drawn route through its changes in direction. Name rows by system or size where that distinction matters to your scope.

Move from the equipment to the served spaces.

  1. Read tags and schedules

    Identify equipment designations and air-device types. Check whether the same unit appears on roof plans, floor plans, and details.

  2. Review each device type

    Place manual points or run Find Similar from a reference on the page. Accept only candidates with the correct type and scope. Keep thermostats separate from the units they serve.

  3. Measure visible runs

    Use a known dimension to calibrate the page. Trace main and branch routes as distinct rows when you need to review them separately.

  4. Check each saved quantity

    Return from a row to its plan geometry. Review route endpoints, uncounted rooms, and transitions that need separate estimating attention.

Similar grilles can serve different systems

A return grille and a supply diffuser can share much of their outline. Find Similar compares the selected reference with the current page; it does not read airflow or assign a system. Check tags, schedule references, and room locations before accepting candidates. Only accepted detections contribute to the smart count; pending and rejected candidates do not.

Know what the length represents

The drawn route is the starting point.

A duct route measured on a floor plan gives you a linear quantity. It does not describe every elbow, transition, takeoff fitting, hanger, or change in elevation. Keep those scope decisions in your estimating review.

The same distinction applies to line sets. A plan route can establish a visible horizontal path, while equipment connections and vertical rises may need information from other drawings or field conditions.

Can I measure duct lengths on a PDF?

Yes. Calibrate the page from a known distance in feet and trace a linear route. The quantity measures the path you draw; it does not automatically identify ductwork.

Can I separate supply and return work?

Yes. Create named rows and layers for the systems you want to review. Layer visibility controls the overlay without removing saved quantities.

Is this HVAC load calculation or equipment selection software?

No. Takeoff provides manual counts, reviewed symbol matches, and measured routes on existing plans. Load calculations, equipment selection, and system design are outside its scope.
